TURNED & POLISHED Bars

Northlake produces the widest size range of turned & polished steel bars in North America, being able to produce up to 30″ diameter. Turned & Polished (T&P), is also referred to as Turned & Straightened, Turned & Machine Straightened (TMS), and Turned & Burnished (T&B).

Turned & Polished is produced by turning or peeling off the outer surface of the Hot Rolled bar to the customer’s specified diameter. The steel is then roll straightened to make the bar straight, and to give it a smooth finish on the surface.

The process of Turning (T&P) removes Hot Rolled surface imperfections such as seams, slivers, and decarburization. This process will generally leave the bar free of surface defects, with uniform carbon content throughout the steel, including to the surface.

The process of Polishing (T&P), which is typically achieved by rotary (or roll) straightening, produces a brighter and smoother surface. This is in addition to improved straightness achieved from the straightening process.

How do Turned & Polished bars compare to Cold Drawn bars?

The choice of CD vs T&P (cold drawn versus turned & polished)

Not all cold finished steel is the same. While cold drawn and turned & polished steel bars have similarities, they are actually different in many ways. Depending on the final end use of the steel, one product may vastly outperform the other. Cold drawn steel will always machine better and have better mechanical properties. Turned & polished will nearly always be free of surface defects and decarb. If a machinist is familiar and used to processing cold drawn steel and suddenly switches to T&P, they will notice reduced tool life and production output.

Both CD and T&P fall under the ASTM A108 cold finished specification (and remember ASTM A108 does not call out mechanical properties or machinability, so you can receive an incorrect cold finished product if not ordered specifically as CD or T&P). It’s important to understand the differences before making a choice, and we’ve provided a data sheet below that compares the distinct features of both products:

Turned & Polished bar specifications:

  • Diameters: Up to 30″ Rd.
  • Lengths: Typical T&P lengths are 20/24′ R/L, but we can produce longer or specific lengths upon request.
  • Steel Grades: 1018 & 1045 are the most widely used, but nearly all grades can be produced as T&P upon request: 1018 – 1045 – 10V45 – 1050 – 1117 – 1141 – 1144 – 12L14 – 1215 – 4130 – 4140 – 4150 – 8620.
  • Surface finish: Smooth and bright, free of most defects.
  • Straightness: Per ASTM A108 (latest revision) Table A1.4, or tighter straightness upon request.
